What is Reiki energy?
-
Reiki
(pronounced ray
key)
is the healing art of transmitting life energy to
another
which has its origins in ancient India. It is a lost art that
was
resurrected in Japan by Mikao Usui. There are many schools of
Reiki,
but traditional Reiki is often referred to as Usui Reiki.
Many believe that Reiki, in its earliest form, was passed
on to Jesus by the Magi when he was exiled as a child to
Egypt. The
Magi believed that Jesus may have been the reincarnation of the
Enlightened One, although there are many other theories
concerning
this. Although it was not called Reiki then, Jesus used this
healing
art to enhance his ministry as did the Buddha.
Reiki was brought to the west in the 1930s when Reiki
master, Chujiro Hayashi returned from Japan to Hawaii to open
her
first healing clinic in Kapaa. Reiki has been passed down from
master
to master and has gained a great deal of popularity in recent
years
as more and more have experienced its power.
Reiki is literally "life force." This life force is
called by many different names in different cultures around the
world. It is "prana" in India, "qi" or "chi" in China, and
"spirit"
in Western traditions to name a few. It is what animates us.
It is in
every life form on the earth in some manner. Every being has
its own
energy pattern much like a fingerprint.
-
What does the energy feel
like?
-
Different people feel Reiki in
different ways.
Somefeel physical sensations such as warmth, a mild
tingling, or a
pulsing or throbbing. Some people feel no physical sensations
at all
but feel a mental or emotional change resulting in calmness or
peacefulness. Some people experience the visualization of
colors in
their mind during treatment, while others do not. However, it
is rare
when a person does not feel deeply relaxed after experiencing
Reiki.
-
What is a Reiki
treatment?
-
Reiki is an ancient healing art
where there
is a laying on of hands. Most typically, the recipient
lies fully
clothed on a treatment table or bed. Energy flows from the
practitioner to the recipient through the hands. The
practitioner
uses a series of hand positions that correspond with the
body's
chakras or energy centers beginning at the
crown and ending at the feet. Each position is normally held for
approximately 3-10 minutes although this varies from recipient to
recipient. This is repeated with the recipient laying on the
stomach.
No pressure is applied and no tissue manipulation is performed
so it
is nothing like massage.

How does Reiki work?
-
To fully understand how Reiki
works it is necessary to first understand that most ancient
health
practices incorporate the whole person (mind, body, spirit)
into the
complete health of a person. Reiki works on the level of "life
force"
or energy. Our energy level is affected by many things such as
physical distress (illness or injury), emotional or mental
distress
(anxiety, stress, anger, fear), or spiritual distress. Reiki
restores
and balances the energy levels that are commonly depleted by
these
distresses. It enhances the body's natural ability to heal
itself.
The practitioner acts as a conduit for this energy so there is no
danger of energy depletion on the practitioner's part. Reiki
normally
has the opposite affect, in fact, because the energy also is
working
on the practitioner as it flows. The transfer continues until the
recipient no longer needs the energy or no longer is willing to
receive it. The experienced practitioner can usually sense when
this
has occurred. It is not possible to receive "too much" Reiki as
all
energy is considered "intelligent".
-
When should a Reiki treatment
occur?
-
Reiki is most effective immediately
after
trauma whether on the physical, mental, or spiritual
level. It
is at these times that a person's natural energies are
mobilizing
to heal. Reiki will enhance and speed this healing while
keeping
a person's personal energy from being depleted. Reiki can
also be
used as a preventative practice.
-
Does Reiki work for
everyone?
-
Reiki works as much as the recipient
is
willing or able to use the energy.
If someone is unwilling to receive the energy, no energy will be
transferred. If a person is completely balanced in all life
aspects,
then the treatment will have minimal or subtle effects. Reiki
does
not cure. It works on the highest level possible. If a person is
close to death, for example, and it is time to pass, then Reiki
can
assist in alleviating fear so that the person is at peace with
death.
Reiki does not take the place of medical treatments. It is used
to
enhance natural healing occurring in the body, mind, and
spirit.
-
Is Reiki a replacement for
Medicine?
-
No. Reiki does not replace
medical treatments. A Reiki practitioner does not diagnose
illness or
disease but only delivers life force energy to the recipient. An
ethical Reiki practitioner will never offer medical advice unless
they are a nurse or medical doctor.
-
Who is qualified to administer
a Reiki
treatment?
-
Reiki can only be administered by
a qualified
practitioner. A qualified practitioner has not only been
trained in
the ancient art of Reiki, but also has been attuned so that no
personal energy is used during treatments. There are three
levels of
training that a practitioner may obtain. They are as follows.
-
-
-
First Degree
-
This is the fundamental
practitioner
training. First degree practitioners have learned
techniques that allow them to do self-healing and
hands on
healing for others. This training includes
attunement which
ensures that none of the practitioner's personal
energy is
used during a healing. The practitioner becomes a
conduit
for the Reiki energy.
-
-
Second Degree
-
Second degree
practitioners have
learned techniques that enhance the Reiki energy's
transfer
as well as techniques on distance healing to be
used for
individual, group, or circumstantial healing. This
degree
deepens the healing process for the practitioner both
mentally and emotionally, effectively clearing their own
energy centers. This intensifies the practitoner's abilities,
and they become more efficient in channeling the Reiki energy
to others.
-
-
Third Degree, or Master Training
-
Those who complete Master
Training are qualified to teach Reiki to others. Master
Training is much more in depth than the first two degrees
and is often reserved for those who wish to dedicate their
lives to healing.
It is a good idea to discuss the training a practitioner has
received before receiving a treatment. Reiki treatments can change a
person's life completely. A good practitioner will be more than
willing to discuss any questions that may arise concerning
treatments
or their own training. It is best to choose a practitioner who is
fully qualified and dedicated.
